THE PRODUCE FLAVOR ZONE: What does a Kiwifruit taste like?

The Kiwifruit originated in the forests of eastern China and was called the “Strawberry Peach.” It was mainly used for medicine. A schoolteacher brought seeds to New Zealand in 1904 and growers there renamed it the “Chinese Gooseberry” which was later named “Kiwifruit” in 1959. 

Kiwifruit tastes like a tangy and sweet strawberry, banana, and citrus. The texture is soft and juicy with tiny edible seeds that add a light crunch. 

The Green Kiwi is tart, bright, and has a citrus refreshing zing. The Golden Yellow Kiwi is sweeter and smoother with tropical hints of mango and pineapple.

An unripe Kiwifruit is very sour, firm and astringent.
