10 FACTS ABOUT GRAPES

10 FACTS ABOUT GRAPES
  • Ancient Origins: Archaeological evidence shows humans started cultivating grapes as early as 6000 BC in present-day Georgia.

  • Massive Variety: There are more than 8,000 to 10,000 grape varieties in the world.

  • Already Ripened: Grapes do not get any sweeter after they are picked. They must be fully ripe before harvesting.

  • The Oldest Vine: The oldest known cultivated grapevine in North America is the 400-year-old “Mother Vine” located on Roanoke Island, North Carolina.

  • Table vs. Wine Grapes: Eating grapes (table grapes) are bred to be large, thin-skinned, and often seedless. Wine grapes are smaller, have thicker skins, and contain many seeds, which provide structure and flavor to wine.

  • The 400 Grape Rule: On average, it takes about 400 individual grapes (or roughly 2.5 pounds) to produce a single 750ml bottle of wine.

  • Global Footprint: Over 70 million tons of grapes are grown globally every year. The majority are used for winemaking. Spain holds the title for the largest physical area dedicated to grape cultivation.

  • Green Grapes: Often called “white grapes,” these lack the genetic mutation required to produce anthocyanins. They retain their light green color due to chlorophyll.

  • Red Grapes: These contain a moderate amount of anthocyanins, which tint the skin anywhere from light pink to a deep ruby red.

  • Black Grapes: These have the highest concentration of anthocyanins, giving them a dark purple or midnight-black appearance.
