THE PRODUCE FLAVOR ZONE: What does a Pomegranate taste like?

Flavor Pom

Pomegranates have lots of tiny seeds that are full of juice. These seeds are called “Arils” that are edible capsules. When bitten into one ore more, it has a juicy, wine-like sweetness accompanied by a refreshing tartness.

Pomegranates are sweet, tangy, and are a mix of the flavors  tart grapes and cranberries with ripe cherries.

Make sure a pomegranate is ripe but not over-mature with slightly shriveled skin. Once it is fermented, it will taste like alcohol or nail polish remover. Also, try to avoid the white stringy parts which are very bitter and not meant to be eaten.

The best way to eat a pomegranate is to slice the top off the crown and extract the aril seeds into a bowl. Gently use your thumbs to pop the seeds out from the membrane.

Eat them with a spoon, toss them in a salad, pour them on yogurt, oatmeal, or in a bowl of cereal and enjoy.

Fall is a perfect time to buy pomegranates. You can find them now in in the produce department.
