SnapDragon Apples Target More Retail Space Following 18% Sales Growth

SnapDragon apples are entering the 2026 season with one of the variety’s largest crops to date after sales increased 18% last season, giving Crunch Time Apple Growers an opportunity to expand the brand’s retail presence.

Harvest is underway across New York, where favorable rainfall and seasonal temperature changes helped produce good sizing and color, according to the grower cooperative.

Crunch Time has also made changes to its packing process designed to preserve freshness and the crisp texture that has become a key part of SnapDragon’s consumer positioning.

“SnapDragon has become a fan favorite, and it’s exciting to see how much people have come to love this apple,” said Jessica Wells, executive director of Crunch Time Apple Growers. “SnapDragon has earned its place, and we believe it’s time to give it more room to grow, both on the retail shelf and in the conversations we’re having with our customers.”

The larger crop comes as the SnapDragon grower network continues expanding.

While New York remains the center of production, emerging plantings in Pennsylvania and direct-market growers elsewhere are helping Crunch Time move production closer to additional markets.

The apple is now available nationwide.

The combination of greater supply and last season’s sales growth is giving the cooperative reason to push for additional merchandising opportunities with retailers.

“We know retailers want more than a great apple,” Wells said. “They want confidence in the supply, consistency in the eating experience and a brand that shoppers recognize and come back for.”

Crunch Time also gave SnapDragon a dedicated presence at the International Fresh Produce Association’s Global Produce & Floral Show this month.

Rather than sharing space with other products, the apple received its own booth, where buyers and other attendees could sample the new crop. The display used recreational imagery including a surfboard, bicycle and hammock to reinforce the brand’s positioning around snacking and an active lifestyle.

SnapDragon was developed through Cornell University’s apple breeding program and is known for its spicy-sweet flavor and particularly crisp bite, marketed by the brand as its “Monster Crunch.”

The variety is managed by Crunch Time Apple Growers, a cooperative of New York apple growers that also markets RubyFrost.

Growth in branded and proprietary apple varieties has increased competition for space in produce departments, making dependable volume increasingly important for brands trying to secure larger retail programs.

For SnapDragon, this season provides an opportunity to convert last year’s sales gains into additional shelf space.

The fruit is already moving into stores, and Crunch Time believes the larger crop gives retailers both the volume and consistency needed to expand programs during the heart of the fall apple season.
