Supermarket mushrooms are grown indoors in highly controlled, sterile environments using a multi-step factory farming process that takes about four months from start to finish. Unlike plants, mushrooms do not use sunlight or photosynthesis; instead, they grow by breaking down nutrients in a rich organic base called a substrate.
