WELCOME TO THE PRODUCE FLAVOR ZONE: What does a Cherry Plum taste like?

Everyone has heard of plums and there are over 2000 varieties worldwide. There are European plums, Japanese plums, and American plums. California has the best climate, fertile soil, and grows the best plums in the Central Valley orchards. There are red, purple, black plums —- and then there are also Cherry Plums.

So, what are Cherry Plums and what do they taste like?

Cherry Plums are small and have a sweet-tart flavor. They are also called Myrobalan Plums, a modern hybrid between plums and cherries. They are similar to the size of a small round plum and ripen from green to red or dark purple.

Cherry Plums have an intensely sour bite when picked and eaten too early. However,  the tree-ripened Cherry Plums have a succulent interior of bold, refreshing rich, sweet plum flavor. When fully juice-ripened, they have an aromatic undertone of a cherry, peach, and a subtle hint of apricot.

Check out these unusual but unique Cherry Plums with your suppliers. Stock them now in the produce department by adding this variety to your stone fruit display.
