Canadian Apple Growers Unite Under New Apples Canada Banner

Canadian apple growers are joining forces under a new national organization designed to give the industry a stronger collective voice on production, sustainability, marketing, research and public policy.

Grower organizations representing British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia have formed Apples Canada/Pommes Canada, bringing major apple-producing regions together through a national collaboration operating with the Fruit and Vegetable Growers of Canada.

The launch comes as growers prepare for the 2026 harvest, with Canada’s apple crop currently forecast at approximately 18.9 million bushels. While that figure is slightly below last year’s production, industry representatives say it remains generally consistent with historical crop levels and should provide solid supplies for Canadian consumers.

The formation of Apples Canada is intended to improve coordination among provincial organizations that have traditionally addressed many industry issues independently. By working together, growers hope to create a more unified approach to challenges that increasingly cross provincial boundaries, including rising production costs, labor availability, crop protection, sustainability requirements and competition from imported fruit.

Marketing will also be an important part of the organization’s work. Canadian growers continue to emphasize the value of maintaining strong visibility for domestically grown apples at retail, particularly as new-crop fruit begins reaching produce departments in late summer and fall.

Canada grows apples commercially in several regions, with major production concentrated in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec, as well as established industries in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Popular varieties include Gala, Ambrosia, Honeycrisp and McIntosh, along with numerous regional and newer varieties.

Modern controlled-atmosphere storage has also extended the selling season considerably. Apples harvested in late summer and fall can remain available for many months, allowing retailers to merchandise Canadian-grown fruit well beyond the traditional harvest period.

That extended season makes coordination around production, storage and market development increasingly important. Apples Canada is expected to provide a forum where growers and provincial organizations can share information, identify common priorities and pursue research and promotional opportunities on a national scale.

The organization also plans to address sustainability and production issues as growers adapt to changing weather patterns, evolving pest pressures and higher costs. Research and innovation will be another priority as apple producers continue investing in new varieties, orchard systems, storage technology and automation.

For retailers, a coordinated national organization could also make it easier to communicate with the Canadian apple industry on merchandising, consumer promotion and local sourcing initiatives.

The launch comes just as the apple business begins transitioning into one of its most important periods of the year. Early varieties start coming off trees in August, with harvest activity building through September and October across the major growing regions.

With the 2026 crop approaching and consumers continuing to show interest in locally and domestically grown produce, Apples Canada enters the marketplace at an opportune time.

The goal is ultimately to strengthen an industry that already plays an important role in produce departments across the country by giving growers a stronger national platform while maintaining the regional identities that have long defined Canadian apple production.
