H-E-B’s $700 Million Expansion Reinforces Importance of Fresh Food Logistics

H-E-B’s $700 Million Expansion Reinforces Importance of Fresh Food Logistics

H-E-B is making its largest-ever investment in manufacturing and supply chain operations, announcing plans to spend $700 million on a major expansion designed to support the company’s continued growth and strengthen its ability to move fresh products throughout Texas.

The expansion centers on the retailer’s Foster Road campus in San Antonio and includes plans for a state-of-the-art bakery, a refrigerated warehouse, a transportation facility and additional manufacturing and distribution infrastructure. Construction on portions of the project is expected to begin this year, with some facilities coming online as early as 2028.

For the produce industry, the most significant component may be the refrigerated warehouse and expanded distribution capabilities. As retailers continue emphasizing fresh foods, maintaining product quality through efficient cold-chain logistics has become increasingly important. Investments in refrigeration, transportation and distribution help ensure fruits, vegetables and other perishables reach stores quickly while maintaining freshness.

The project is expected to create 720 jobs by 2028 and more than 1,200 full-time positions over the next decade. Company officials say the expansion will help H-E-B better serve a growing customer base while supporting long-term supply chain needs.

“We look forward to advancing our plans to grow our supply chain operations,” said Carson Landsgard, H-E-B’s chief supply chain officer. “This will be a major investment for H-E-B that will create jobs and better position us to serve even more Texans.”

The announcement reflects a broader trend throughout grocery retail. As consumer demand for fresh foods continues to grow, retailers are investing heavily behind the scenes in warehouses, transportation networks and cold-storage facilities. While shoppers often focus on what they see in stores, much of the work required to deliver high-quality produce happens within complex logistics systems that operate around the clock.

H-E-B has already invested more than $445 million at the Foster Road site, which currently includes a large warehouse and manufacturing operation employing nearly 1,400 people. If the latest expansion moves forward as planned, total investment at the campus will exceed $1 billion and the workforce will grow substantially.

The company’s decision to invest so heavily in infrastructure highlights the growing importance of supply chain reliability in grocery retail. Fresh produce departments depend on efficient transportation, temperature control and inventory management to maintain quality and reduce shrink. As retailers compete to provide consumers with fresher products and broader assortments, investments in logistics are becoming just as important as investments in stores themselves.
