California Avocado Month Shines Spotlight on Peak Season Availability

June has officially become one of the most important months of the year for California avocado growers, retailers and consumers alike as the industry celebrates the 14th annual California Avocado Month campaign.
Led by the California Avocado Commission, the program was created to coincide with the heart of California’s avocado season, when availability is at its highest and retailers have the greatest opportunity to promote locally grown fruit. This year’s campaign arrives as California growers prepare to market an estimated 330 million-pound crop, one of the larger harvests in recent years.
The Commission has built California Avocado Month into a major marketing initiative that provides retailers with promotional support, merchandising materials, advertising campaigns and consumer outreach designed to increase sales during peak season. According to the organization, June was selected because it consistently falls within the strongest period of availability for California avocados.
For produce departments, the timing could not be better. California avocado harvest is expected to peak between April and August, aligning with a series of major summer selling occasions including Father’s Day, graduations, outdoor entertaining and grilling season. Retailers are being encouraged to feature California avocados prominently through displays, ads and cross- merchandising programs.
The campaign also reflects the growing importance of origin marketing within produce. While avocados are available year-round from multiple sourcing regions, California-grown fruit offers retailers an opportunity to capitalize on local and domestic sourcing trends. The Commission continues to emphasize the state’s nearly 3,000 avocado growers and the sustainable farming practices behind the crop.
Industry leaders increasingly view commodity boards as marketing partners rather than simply promotional organizations. Through consumer advertising, social media campaigns, recipe development and retail support, the California Avocado Commission works to drive demand while helping retailers maximize sales opportunities during the season.
This year’s crop outlook adds to the optimism. The Commission’s early-season forecast projects approximately 330 million pounds of California avocados for 2026, providing retailers with promotable volumes throughout the summer. Industry reports indicate harvest is ramping up steadily, with shipments expected to remain strong during the coming months.
For shoppers, California Avocado Month serves as a reminder to look for locally grown fruit during peak season. For retailers, it represents an opportunity to leverage one of produce’s strongest-performing categories. Avocados continue to benefit from strong consumer demand, supported by their versatility, nutrition profile and popularity across multiple meal occasions.
As summer gets underway, the combination of a sizeable crop, strong consumer interest and coordinated marketing support positions California avocados for another successful season. The program’s longevity also demonstrates how effective commodity-specific promotions can be when they align with peak availability and retailer needs.
With promotable supplies available and consumer demand remaining robust, California Avocado Month is once again giving growers and retailers a valuable platform to showcase one of the state’s signature produce items.
